Fast Walking Linked to About 50% Lower Dementia Risk in Seniors
A study published in the journal Neurology examined nearly 4,000 adults aged 80 and older and found that those who walked fastest – the top 9% of speed, termed “super movers” – had roughly half the risk of developing cognitive decline compared with slower walkers. Their hippocampal volume was better preserved with age, and despite the presence of Alzheimer‑related plaques and tau in some brains, these individuals showed no clinical symptoms, illustrating “cognitive resilience.”
Researchers highlighted that brisk walking engages the whole brain‑body system, releasing muscle‑derived factors that boost BDNF in the hippocampus. Dr. Joe Verghese, senior author, said, “Fast walking is a sign of a healthy aging brain and body.” The authors stress that regular, sustained movement – whether walking, swimming, or cycling – is the key, and that targeted resistance training can further improve walking speed and protect against age‑related muscle loss.
The findings suggest a simple, measurable target for older adults: a 10‑meter walk completed in under 7 seconds (speed > 1.25 m/s) may indicate “super mover” potential, while slower times could signal higher risk of cognitive decline. Public‑health messages are encouraging older people to incorporate consistent, moderately intense walking and resistance exercises to maintain both physical and cognitive health.
