AI technology evolves through national strategies and safety warnings

The global landscape of artificial intelligence is seeing diverse developments ranging from national strategic efforts to safety warnings and consumer product trends.

In South Korea, domestic companies including LG AI Research, SK Telecom, and Upstage are rapidly advancing foundation AI models to compete with the US and China. While South Korean models have shown significant improvements in reasoning and coding, experts suggest the nation is still working toward becoming a top-three global AI power.

On the safety front, Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton has warned of the unpredictable nature of AI development, noting that systems can exhibit unexpected behaviors, such as developing self-preservation tactics. This highlights the growing gap between AI application and the creation of tangible business value, as many enterprises struggle to move beyond pilot projects.

Consumer technology is also seeing niche applications, such as the HMD Touch AI in China, a low-cost device that utilizes cloud-based AI via APIs rather than on-device processing.
