Fatah and Hamas dialogue reports face conflicting claims

Reports regarding a potential bilateral meeting between Fatah and Hamas in Cairo to resume national dialogue have met with conflicting accounts. While some Palestinian sources indicated that delegations were preparing for a meeting, possibly as early as next Monday, Fatah official Jamal Nazal has denied that such a meeting is scheduled for the near future.

Nazal stated that Fatah sees no current utility in a bilateral meeting with Hamas, citing commitments made by Hamas regarding U.S.-led plans for Gaza, specifically concerning governance. However, Nazal clarified that there is no current movement to ban Hamas from political activity. He emphasized that participation in the upcoming legislative elections, scheduled for November 28, 2026, will be governed by election laws and the authority of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

Hamas has expressed its intention to participate in the elections within a broad national coalition. The political divide between the two factions has persisted since 2007, despite various mediation attempts by international and regional actors.
