Fatah factions hold talks in Egypt to discuss movement unification

Samir al-Mashharawi, deputy head of the Democratic Reform Current within Fatah, stated that unifying the Fatah movement could provide a significant boost toward achieving genuine Palestinian national unity. These remarks follow a meeting in Alamein, Egypt, hosted under Egyptian auspices to reconcile internal divisions within the movement.

The meeting included a Fatah delegation led by Hussein al-Sheikh, along with members of the Democratic Reform Current. Discussions focused on unifying Fatah, the national situation in Gaza and the West Bank, and the future of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

While al-Mashharawi described the atmosphere as positive, he emphasized that the talks have not yet resulted in executive decisions. He noted that the Fatah delegation must consult with President Mahmoud Abbas regarding the proposals. The Democratic Reform Current has presented seven points aimed at organizational unification, specifically addressing issues such as the rights of cadres who faced dismissal, exclusion, or salary suspensions.
