Wettringen: Senior woman dies after falling into farm cistern

An 80-year-old woman has died following a tragic accident at a farm in Wettringen, located in the Ansbach district of Middle Franconia, Germany.

According to police reports, the woman fell into a shallow cistern, which was reportedly a rainwater collection basin that had previously served as a slurry pit. Initial findings suggest that a wooden cover over the approximately one-meter-deep container may have given way as she stood on it.

Emergency services, including multiple fire departments and a rescue helicopter, were dispatched to the scene, but rescue attempts were unsuccessful. While the exact cause of death remains unclear—with possibilities including drowning, injuries from the fall, or a prior medical emergency—police have stated that there is no evidence of third-party involvement. The criminal police in Ansbach are currently investigating the incident.
