Cagliari highway collision kills two, injures twelve

A violent three‑vehicle collision occurred on the Statale 125 Var near Cagliari, at kilometre 14 close to the Arcu Sa Porta tunnel. Two of the vehicles caught fire, prompting the deployment of fire‑fighting helicopters, a Canadair aircraft and ground crews. Two people died: a 78‑year‑old man from Rome and a 50‑year‑old man from Settimo San Pietro. Twelve others were injured, eight of them seriously, and were taken to hospital by emergency services. The road was closed in both directions between kilometres 8 and 14 while investigators from the Carabinieri, fire brigade and ANAS carried out rescue operations and safety checks. The incident is under investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
