Fatal residential fires reported in Abidjan and Conakry

Two separate fatal residential fires have occurred in West Africa, resulting in multiple deaths.

In Abidjan, Ivory Coast, an apartment fire in the Cocody-Angré district killed five young women and left two others seriously injured. The victims had gathered in a five-room furnished apartment to celebrate a family wedding. The fire, which broke out during the early hours of Saturday, September 12, reportedly spread rapidly after thick black smoke woke the occupants. Emergency responders from the local police and the military firefighter group (GSPM) attended the scene; the two survivors were evacuated to the Cocody University Hospital Center.

In Conakry, Guinea, a fire in the Gbessia Cité 2 neighborhood claimed the lives of four members of the same family. The victims have been identified as Ahmed Condé, his wife Fatoumata Sangaré, their child Mamadi Condé, and Fatoumata’s younger sister. The incident caused significant material damage to the family property. Local authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the blaze, which has renewed concerns regarding fire prevention and emergency access in the region.
