Fatal workplace accident at a quarry in Gorj County

A fatal workplace accident occurred on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at a quarry in the locality of Pleșa, Gorj County. A 58-year-old man from Bumbești-Jiu was struck by heavy machinery during loading operations involving a vehicle assembly.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a 53-year-old operator from Schela was performing loading maneuvers. While reversing the machinery, the operator struck the 58-year-old victim. Although medical teams arrived at the scene and attempted resuscitation efforts, the man was pronounced dead.

Both the machinery operator and the deceased were employees of the company operating within the quarry. The Gorj County Police have opened a criminal investigation into manslaughter, as well as the failure to implement and respect legal occupational health and safety measures.
