Ourense worker dies following massive wasp attack
A forestry worker, identified as José E. A., died in Larouco, Ourense, after being attacked by a swarm of invasive Asian wasps (Vespa velutina) while performing clearing duties. Despite emergency interventions involving a medicalized ambulance, a helicopter, and CPR attempts by colleagues, the man passed away at the scene.
The insects reportedly bypassed the worker's protective gear, attacking his face, neck, and upper body. Local authorities noted that the attack occurred during a period where wasp activity has seen an extraordinary increase, potentially due to drought-related seasonal delays. This incident follows a pattern in Galicia, where three other deaths from the same species were recorded in a short period last year.
The victim was a resident of Manzaneda and worked for an employment workshop serving several municipalities in the region.
