FATF to launch targeted review of crypto anti-money laundering compliance

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has announced a targeted review to evaluate how countries with significant virtual asset activity implement international anti-money laundering (AML) standards. The initiative aims to address implementation gaps that criminals exploit and will focus on jurisdictions with materially important virtual asset service provider (VASP) activity.

The review process will utilize existing assessment and follow-up mechanisms to reinforce accountability and transparency. Initial findings from this review are scheduled for release in June 2027, with additional results expected in October 2027.

South Korea has been identified as a country that will report on its implementation status, as it did not undergo a formal evaluation of Recommendation 15, which governs virtual assets, during its previous fourth mutual evaluation. Pakistan is also among the 68 jurisdictions identified by the FATF as having materially important crypto activity. The FATF has not yet released a specific list of all countries subject to this review.
