Father Gerard Paul Turns to Calypso to Protest Gaza and Church Abuse in Grenada

Father Gerard Paul, a 64‑year‑old Catholic priest from Grenada, was suspended after repeatedly criticizing the church and delivering a sermon that condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza. Unable to celebrate masses, funerals, weddings or baptisms, he has turned to calypso music as a new platform for his messages.

At Grenada’s Spicemas carnival, Paul entered the calypso finals under the name “Father Paul,” performing songs such as “Oh Gaza” and “Ah Want Ah Radar.” The lyrics address the Gaza conflict, sexual abuse within the church, and a past U.S. request for a radar installation at the island’s airport. Paul says the music lets him reach a wider audience and serve as a “pulpit” for social criticism.
