Father Willie Doyle's sainthood cause moves to Rome
The canonization process for Father Willie Doyle, an Irish Jesuit chaplain who served during World War I, is advancing to the Vatican. The diocesan phase of his cause formally concluded on October 18, marking the first such formal closure in Ireland in over 40 years.
Father Doyle, a Dubliner, volunteered as a military chaplain for the Irish division of the British Army in 1915. He served on various battlefields, including the Somme and Messines, before being killed by shellfire on August 16, 1917, at the Battle of Passchendaele. He died while attempting to assist two wounded soldiers.
The Catholic Church has described Doyle as an ‘ecumenical martyr of charity’ because he died while aiding soldiers of different Christian denominations. The Fr Willie Doyle Association, a group founded in 2020 to promote his cause, expressed that the movement toward sainthood provides a message of peace and reconciliation for the modern era. If successful, Doyle would be the first Irish saint recognized by the Church since St. Oliver Plunkett in 1975.
