Fatick police arrest clandestine taxi driver for diesel trafficking

Police in Fatick, Senegal, have arrested a clandestine taxi driver suspected of operating an illegal diesel trafficking ring for approximately three years. The arrest followed an investigation triggered by intelligence regarding petroleum product trafficking in the Peulga neighborhood.

During a previous search of the suspect's residence in August 2026, investigators discovered 15 filled 20-liter jerrycans of diesel and 74 empty containers in a ditch behind the property. After a two-month search, the suspect was apprehended on October 7, 2026, while driving a Peugeot 307 on the road leading to Diakhao. Authorities also seized cash believed to be proceeds from the illicit activity.

In addition to fuel trafficking, the individual faces charges for irregular passenger transport and operating without the required Category D driver's license. The case highlights the ongoing issue of informal hydrocarbon networks operating outside of Senegalese regulations.
