Fatim Diarra proposes regulating smart glasses in schools

Finnish Green League Member of Parliament Fatim Diarra is preparing a legislative initiative to address the use of smart glasses in schools. The proposal aims to provide educational institutions with clear methods to intervene when these devices are used inappropriately.

Diarra highlights several risks associated with the increasing availability and affordability of AI-assisted smart glasses. Key concerns include the potential for academic cheating and threats to student privacy through unauthorized filming or photography, which could lead to new forms of bullying.

Existing legislation, which previously banned mobile phones during lessons, does not currently account for smart glasses. Diarra notes that while high-end models are expensive, cheaper versions are widely accessible through online retailers, making the issue a growing challenge for schools. The initiative is expected to be submitted when the parliamentary session begins in early September.
