Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri appointed Morocco's first female head of government

King Mohammed VI has appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as Morocco’s new head of government, making her the first woman to hold the position since the country gained independence.

The appointment follows the legislative elections held on September 23, 2026. El Mansouri’s party, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), secured 97 seats in the 395-seat House of Representatives, placing it ahead of the National Rally of Independents (66 seats) and the Istiqlal Party (65 seats).

Because the PAM does not hold an absolute majority, El Mansouri must now engage in political consultations to form a governing coalition. These discussions involve various political factions to establish a stable parliamentary majority. Some parties, such as the Justice and Development Party (PJD), have already indicated intentions to remain in the opposition.

El Mansouri, a 50-year-old lawyer and former Mayor of Marrakech, previously served as the Minister of National Planning, Urbanism, Housing, and City Policy. Her new administration will face challenges including economic issues, employment, and preparations for the 2030 World Cup.
