Fatima Zahra El Mansouri appointed Morocco's first female head of government

Fatima Zahra El Mansouri has been appointed by King Mohammed VI as Morocco's first female head of government. Her appointment follows the September 23, 2026, legislative elections, in which the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) secured the most seats, winning 97 of the 395 available in the House of Representatives.

El Mansouri, 50, previously served as the mayor of Marrakech. She is currently engaged in intensive consultations with various political parties to form a coalition government. Key parties involved in these negotiations include the RNI, Istiqlal, and the Movement Popular, among others. The Constitutional Union (UC) has also mandated its leadership to participate in these discussions, emphasizing priorities such as job creation and protecting purchasing power.

The new government faces the significant task of managing Morocco's preparations for the 2030 World Cup. While her appointment is seen as a historic milestone for women's representation in the Arab world, political analysts note that the King retains ultimate executive authority in Morocco's constitutional monarchy.
