Fats Boost Honeybee Resilience to Pesticides, Study Finds
Scientists have shown that honeybees eating lipid‑rich diets are better able to detoxify common neonicotinoid pesticides. The research indicates that specific fatty acids up‑regulate cytochrome P450 enzymes in the bee midgut, reducing oxidative stress and mortality when bees are exposed to field‑realistic pesticide levels.
At the same time, widespread observations of dead bumblebees on sidewalks have raised alarm about pollinator health and broader environmental stressors. Together, the findings suggest that managing floral resources to provide lipid‑rich nectar and pollen could help sustain both honeybee colonies and wild bumblebee populations.
The study recommends that beekeepers and land managers incorporate fat‑enhancing plants, such as certain brassicas and wildflowers, into forage habitats to improve colony survivorship and mitigate pesticide impacts.
