Faust adaptations in Europe: Švankmajer film and Bavarian opera

Jan Švankmajer’s surrealist film "Lekce Faust" reimagines Goethe’s legend with stop‑motion and clay‑animation, portraying an ordinary man who makes a pact with Mephistopheles after receiving a mysterious map. The 1994 Czech‑French‑English production blends live actors and puppets in a non‑linear narrative that modernises the classic tale.

At the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, director Lotte de Beer staged Charles Gounod’s 1859 opera "Faust" with a stark black‑and‑white visual design. The production emphasizes the conflict between egoistic desire and social responsibility, using minimalist sets, a curved stage and contrasting lighting to highlight Faust’s moral decline and Mephistopheles’s role as a seductive catalyst.
