Favignana Island Prepares for Tourism Surge After Christopher Nolan's 'Odiseea' Success
The Italian island of Favignana, the largest of the Egadi archipelago off Sicily’s west coast, is gearing up for a wave of visitors after Christopher Nolan’s film "Odiseea" (released in July) earned more than $264 million in its opening weekend. The production used the island as the on‑screen Ithaca, with the Castle of Santa Caterina serving as Ulysses’ palace.
Local officials, led by mayor Giuseppe Pagoto, are working with Sicily’s culture department and Universal Pictures to turn the film’s exposure into a lasting tourism draw. Plans include a permanent exhibition in the former Florio tuna‑processing plant, slated to open in October, and the conversion of historic sites such as the Palazzotto Florio into luxury hospitality venues. The mayor emphasized the need to avoid overtourism while attracting high‑end visitors from North America, the Middle East and India.
The film’s crew spent several months on the island between late 2024 and spring 2025, employing around 500 local extras and workers and injecting an estimated €1‑2 million into the local economy. Authorities hope the boost will benefit the island’s roughly 3,000 residents and position western Sicily as a new destination for American tourists.
