Favignana prepares for tourism surge following Nolan film production

The Italian island of Favignana is preparing for a significant surge in tourism following its use as a filming location for Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster film, ‘The Odyssey’. The production, which utilized the island to represent Ithaca, employed approximately 500 local workers and used the Castello di Santa Caterina as the hero’s palace.

Local authorities, including Mayor Giuseppe Pagoto, are working to transform this cinematic connection into a permanent attraction. Plans include a potential exhibition at the former Florio tuna-processing plant, which served as the production headquarters, to showcase costumes and equipment.

While local business leaders, such as Giacomo Incarbona of the hotel operators’ association, anticipate increased international interest—particularly from the United States—officials are also focused on managing the risks of overtourism and ensuring basic services and beach maintenance can meet the expected higher demand.
