Fayetteville utility providers announce infrastructure upgrades and rate increases

Fayetteville residents are facing utility changes as both water and electricity providers implement new measures. West Virginia American Water has announced a $512,000 infrastructure project on Fayette Avenue to replace approximately 1,040 feet of aging water pipe with a new 6-inch PVC main. The project is expected to conclude by the end of October, though final street restoration is scheduled for fall 2026. Customers may experience temporary service interruptions, lower pressure, or discolored water during construction.

Separately, the Fayetteville Public Works Commission (PWC) board voted unanimously to increase the electricity surcharge effective September 1. This adjustment aims to cover rising wholesale electricity costs paid to Duke Energy Progress, which exceeded projections by $18.1 million. PWC staff estimate the average residential bill will increase by approximately $1.24 per month. This marks the second price increase since May, with another scheduled for May 2027.
