FBI agents seek clarification on gag orders for Mar-a-Lago probe

FBI agents involved in the investigation of Donald Trump’s handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago have requested clarification from Judge Aileen Cannon regarding their ability to testify before a grand jury. The agents, who were subpoenaed as part of a South Florida investigation into whether federal officials conspired to deprive Trump of his rights, expressed concern that existing gag orders and restrictions on disclosing Special Counsel Jack Smith’s report could place them in a legal bind.

According to court filings, the agents face a dilemma: disclosing certain information could result in being held in contempt of court, while failing to provide the information requested by the grand jury could lead to separate legal consequences. This uncertainty complicates the “grand conspiracy” investigation, which remains a priority for the Department of Justice.

The investigation has seen recent leadership shifts following the resignation of attorney Joe diGenova, who stepped down after disagreements with senior department officials regarding the pace of the probe. Following his departure, Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter and Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General Aakash Singh met with U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones and his deputy, Yara Klukas, to discuss the ongoing direction of the case.
