FBI agents targeted in San Diego gang crackdown
Federal agents were fired upon during a massive law enforcement operation targeting an alleged Mexican Mafia-connected drug empire in San Diego County. The gunfire occurred at approximately 6:10 a.m. Wednesday in Lemon Grove, as agents were serving an arrest warrant. While agents briefly returned fire before retreating to safety, no one was struck by the bullets.
The two-day operation involved hundreds of officers and resulted in the arrest of 35 suspects and the execution of 10 search warrants. Federal indictments charge 42 individuals, including members and associates of the Varrio Hidden Hills street gang, with various crimes. Authorities are still searching for seven fugitives.
The investigation centers on John Marquez, 49, who is accused of managing an international drug-trafficking operation that distributed methamphetamine and fentanyl into California communities. Law enforcement seized various quantities of drugs, firearms, and cash during the sweep.
