FBI arrests teenager for alleged plot to assassinate Texas Rep. Keith Self
Federal agents have arrested a 17-year-old resident of McKinney, Texas, for allegedly plotting to assassinate Republican Representative Keith Self. The suspect was taken into custody on October 5 after reportedly acquiring a firearm.
Investigators believe the planned attack was intended for an October 17 veterans fundraiser where Rep. Self was scheduled to appear. According to Texas Governor Greg Abbott and federal sources, the teenager had been recently radicalized by ISIS and was being monitored by federal agents. Law enforcement officials stated they intervened before any harm could occur.
Rep. Self, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, expressed gratitude to the FBI and law enforcement for stopping the threat. He noted that while threats against members of Congress have become common, this case was significant because investigators successfully made an arrest. The suspect remains in federal custody.
