Wanying Zhang arrested by FBI for allegedly spying for China

The FBI has arrested 34-year-old Wanying “Heather” Zhang, a real estate agent from Irvine, California, on federal charges of acting as an unregistered agent of the People’s Republic of China. Zhang was apprehended at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) while attempting to board a flight to Shanghai.

According to federal prosecutors, Zhang traveled to Seattle in 2025 at the direction of Chinese officials to surveil Lai Ting-yu, the son of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te. Investigators allege that Zhang and an associate used a rental vehicle to monitor the target and his family, capturing photos, videos, and license plate information. This data was subsequently transmitted to Chinese officials via messaging applications.

The Taiwan Presidential Office condemned the incident, describing it as a “typical case of interstate repression” and a violation of human rights and sovereignty. FBI Director Kash Patel remarked that the arrest serves as a warning that the United States is no longer a safe location for foreign adversaries to conduct espionage operations.
