FBI Chicago chief Douglas DePodesta resigns under pressure

Douglas DePodesta, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Chicago field office, announced his resignation effective Monday after receiving a directive to retire. In a farewell note to colleagues, DePodesta wrote, “I’ve never backed down from a fight…my departure is a consequence of that.”

His exit is part of a broader shake‑up within the FBI, where Director Kash Patel has been urging line agents and supervisors to step aside if they are not aligned with the Trump administration’s agenda. The FBI’s rapid‑response account on X responded to the news, stating that anyone not on board with the current leadership is free to leave.

DePodesta joined the Chicago office in 2002, previously serving in Detroit, Memphis and at FBI headquarters. The resignation comes amid ongoing turbulence in Chicago’s law‑enforcement community, including a review of over 1,000 grand‑jury presentations by Illinois prosecutors.
