FBI: Chinese hacking group targeted U.S. agencies for years
The FBI and the Department of Justice have announced that a Chinese government-backed hacking group, identified as “QTFY,” has conducted targeted cyberattacks against hundreds of U.S. entities for several years.
According to unsealed court documents, the group includes former members of the Chinese military and has been compromising critical infrastructure since 2018. The targets include government agencies such as NASA, the Department of Energy, the U.S. Senate, the Federal Reserve, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The group has also targeted hospitals, telecommunications providers, power companies, and defense contractors.
In September 2024, the group reportedly carried out computer intrusions at three Department of Energy laboratories, the NIH, an HHS agency, and a U.S. security device manufacturer. Prosecutors have successfully seized three internet domains associated with the Chinese firm Nanjing Xinjiuwei Network Technology Company as part of efforts to disrupt the group's operations.
