FBI Confiscates More Than $8 Billion in Crypto in Record US Forfeiture
The FBI seized over $8 billion in cryptocurrency in a sweeping international operation that also freed nearly 2,000 trafficked workers and resulted in almost 300 arrests. Authorities shut down multiple “scam compounds” linked to groups such as the Prince Group in Cambodia, Operation Sand Dollar in Dubai, and the Democratic Karen Benevolent Army in Myanmar, and seized office supplies and thousands of smartphones in Thailand.
The agency’s 2025 Internet Crime Report documented a surge in cyber‑enabled crime, with more than 1 million complaints and nearly $21 billion in reported losses. Cryptocurrency fraud accounted for about $11 billion of those losses, while a newly added AI‑scam category generated $893 million in losses from over 22,000 complaints. Americans over age 60 suffered the greatest impact, reporting $7.7 billion in losses.
The operation and the report highlight the growing threat of crypto and AI‑enabled scams, prompting the FBI to advise the public to be cautious of unsolicited financial requests.
