FBI data breach claimed by hacking group ShinyHunters
The hacking collective ShinyHunters claims to have breached FBI servers, potentially compromising the personal data of approximately 38,000 current and former employees, as well as job applicants. The group asserts they accessed an online recruitment portal, obtaining sensitive details including names, roles, badge numbers, home addresses, phone numbers, and information regarding spouses.
Reports indicate the breach may have exposed members of the FBI's secretive Remote Operations Unit. Some stolen data appears to involve personnel assigned to sensitive national security tasks, including investigations into Chinese intelligence, Russian intelligence, and drug cartels.
The group stated the attack is an act of retaliation, demanding that the FBI retract a May advisory that characterized ShinyHunters as aggressive threat actors. The hackers have issued a one-week ultimatum to the bureau to meet their demands or face a full public release of the data. The FBI has confirmed it is aware of the unauthorized activity and is currently conducting an investigation.
