FBI data breach threatens personal information of agents and DOJ employees

A cybersecurity breach involving the FBI job portal has escalated, potentially impacting the entire Department of Justice. Following an initial hack in September, the FBI confirmed that cybercriminals exfiltrated the personal data of thousands of agents. Stolen information includes Social Security numbers, home addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, and emergency contact details.

A recent memo from Francey Hakes, Director of the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys, suggests the breach may extend beyond the FBI. The memo warns that hackers may have accessed sensitive background check data for Department of Justice employees and applicants across various U.S. attorney offices.

The FBI stated it is working to analyze the data and validate contact information to ensure prompt notifications are sent to those impacted. Many affected workers have not yet been notified of the compromise.
