FBI Director Kash Patel Criticized for Publicizing Sealed Terror Plot

FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X on June 16 that five suspects had been arrested for an alleged drone‑and‑explosive plot targeting a UFC event held at the White House. Law‑enforcement officials said the investigation was still under a court seal, making the disclosure a breach of legal restrictions and FBI protocol.

Former FBI counter‑terrorism officials and veterans, including Lauren Anderson and Philip Field, condemned Patel’s actions as prioritising publicity over investigative discretion, warning that such leaks could jeopardise ongoing work and agency trust. Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn echoed the concern, urging officials not to “choke on their own smoke.”

Hours after Patel’s tweet, the Department of Justice formally unsealed charges against the five men, and two additional suspects were later charged. The FBI maintains that the operation was not compromised and that arrests continued.
