FBI employees sue over dismissals linked to Trump documents probe

Nine former FBI employees, including special agents, intelligence analysts, and staff operations specialists, filed a lawsuit in a Washington federal court on October 15, 2026. The plaintiffs allege they were unlawfully terminated in February 2026 as a form of political retribution for their involvement in the investigation into Donald Trump’s handling of classified documents, an inquiry internally known as 'Plasmic Echo'.

The legal action names FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Todd Blanche as defendants, alongside the FBI and the Department of Justice. The lawsuit contends that the dismissals occurred without internal disciplinary investigations, prior notice, or the opportunity to appeal. The plaintiffs, who possess over a century of combined service including work on the Boston Marathon bombing and the 2024 Trump assassination attempt investigation, are seeking full reinstatement, back pay, and a judicial declaration that their firings were unlawful.

While Kash Patel has testified to Congress that the dismissed employees had 'weaponized' the FBI, the plaintiffs argue their removal was a targeted effort to purge individuals associated with sensitive investigations involving the current administration.
