FBI ends automatic hiring ban for applicants with past prostitution encounters

The FBI is ending its categorical hiring ban on applicants who have had sexual encounters with prostitutes, opting instead for a more holistic review of such candidates. This shift follows previous relaxations in recruitment standards, such as the bureau’s adjusted stance on past marijuana use, as the agency seeks to replenish its workforce.

Despite the change, strict limitations remain. The bureau will continue to disqualify applicants who have engaged in prostitution within the last 10 years, those who have engaged in the practice three or more times, or those who did so while in a position of public trust.

The FBI stated the policy change aims to account for service members who may have engaged in the practice in jurisdictions where it is legal, as well as to accommodate applicants who were victims of sexual abuse. The agency emphasized that criminal sexual acts remain disqualifying and that the background check process remains extensive.
