FBI Says AI‑Generated Scams Cost U.S. Consumers $21 Billion in 2025

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reported that AI‑driven synthetic identities and deepfake technologies were behind an estimated $21 billion in fraud losses for American consumers in 2025. Criminals are using large‑language models, voice cloning, and realistic video impersonations to bypass security checks, creating entirely fictitious digital personas that obtain credit, secure loans and then disappear with the proceeds.

In parallel, major banks are adopting AI to combat such threats and improve efficiency. Citi disclosed that its AI‑powered document‑processing system now reduces account‑opening review time from about an hour to 15 minutes, streamlining KYC and compliance workflows. The bank expects similar automation across roughly 50 high‑volume processes, aiming to cut errors, accelerate revenue recognition and free staff for higher‑value tasks.
