FBI seeks voter registration IP addresses in South Carolina

The Federal Bureau of Investigation obtained the internet protocol (IP) address associated with an online voter registration in South Carolina after requesting the data from state and local election officials. Email exchanges show the FBI agent’s request was complied with under South Carolina law, and York County election official Alan Helms said it was the first law‑enforcement request of this type in his two‑decade tenure.

The request is part of a broader Trump‑administration effort to investigate alleged 2020 election fraud, with the Justice Department filing lawsuits against multiple states and other agencies seeking voter‑roll information. Critics have called the move a “fishing expedition” that could undermine confidence in the integrity of the federal election process.
