FBI sued by NCLA over social media payment records

The New Civil Liberties Alliance (NCLA) has petitioned the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to compel the FBI to release records regarding alleged payments to Twitter and other organizations. The legal action stems from a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request seeking to determine if taxpayer funds were used to facilitate government-led content moderation or censorship requests.

The dispute is linked to the ‘Twitter Files,’ which referenced internal communications suggesting the FBI paid approximately $3.4 million to Twitter. The NCLA seeks to clarify whether these payments were strictly for lawful investigative reimbursements or if they were connected to efforts to suppress specific viewpoints or influence social media content.

The FBI has resisted the request, citing FOIA exemptions. The bureau has argued that releasing the records could reveal sensitive law enforcement techniques and has, in some instances, stated it could neither confirm nor deny the existence of the requested documents.
