FBI uses blockchain analytics to bust darknet opioid operation

Federal authorities have charged two brothers from Jacksonville, Florida, for operating a darknet drug business that distributed counterfeit nitazene-laced pills. Vladislav and Stanislav Chernyshov allegedly operated under the darknet vendor account ‘BarbaraWhite’ on marketplaces such as Nemesis, Bohemia, and Abacus since at least 2020.

Investigators used blockchain analytics to trace approximately $230,000 in Bitcoin transactions, which helped link the pseudonymous account to the brothers. The investigation revealed that the operation moved over 95,000 counterfeit pills and was linked to at least 12 overdoses, including three fatalities.

Blockchain tracing tools, including Chainalysis Reactor, allowed investigators to map wallet activity and identify payments to various entities, including a China-based chemical supplier that allegedly provided substances under the guise of ‘research chemicals.’ The digital trail also connected the darknet wallets to Stanislav Chernyshov’s personal mobile payment accounts.
