FBI warns of cybercriminals stealing intimate media via social engineering

The FBI has issued a warning regarding a rise in cybercriminal activity targeting the social media accounts of both adults and children. Hackers are specifically seeking to steal intimate photos and videos to facilitate sextortion, harassment, stalking, and other targeted attacks.

Criminals primarily utilize social engineering tactics to gain access. Common methods include brute-forcing accounts using leaked passwords and impersonating customer service representatives from platforms like Instagram. Some attackers use phishing emails with fake domains that mimic legitimate login pages to deceive users.

Security experts, including Rachel Tobac of SocialProof Security, note that these attacks are a significant public health concern, particularly for young boys who may face severe psychological distress or self-harm. Additionally, data regarding children is increasingly targeted; the FTC reported a 40 percent increase in child identity theft cases between 2021 and 2024.

To mitigate risks, authorities recommend using unique passwords managed by a password manager, enabling multi-factor authentication, and avoiding the storage of sensitive or intimate media in online accounts.
