FBI warns of sophisticated federal agent impersonation scams
The FBI has issued a warning regarding a sophisticated impersonation scam where criminals pose as agents from the FBI, DEA, and Secret Service. Fraudsters are utilizing spoofed phone numbers and the names of actual federal employees to increase the credibility of their calls.
In some instances, scammers have used video calls featuring staged environments designed to look like legitimate federal offices, complete with agency seals, desks, and American flags. These criminals often claim targets are linked to criminal activity or have warrants for their arrest, subsequently demanding payment via cash, credit cards, gift cards, or bank transfers to resolve the matter.
Special Agent in Charge Stephanie Roddy of the Newark FBI office noted that even if a person calls an authentic field office to verify an agent's name, it does not guarantee the caller is legitimate, as the name itself is being borrowed from real staff. The FBI emphasizes that legitimate federal law enforcement officers will never demand money over the phone and advises citizens to independently verify contact information through official channels.
