Fábio Paim accused of rape and home invasion in Portugal

Former professional footballer Fábio Paim faces trial on November 18 for the alleged rape of a 20-year-old university student in Faro, Portugal. The incident is reported to have occurred in the early hours of April 20, 2023.

According to the Public Ministry, Paim allegedly broke into a shared student apartment after seeing a woman he knew in a bar. The prosecution claims he entered the residence by force, assaulted the victim by pulling her hair and throwing her against a wall, and subsequently raped her. He also faces charges of trespassing and property damage.

Investigators reportedly identified Paim through biological traces and DNA found on the victim's clothing. Witnesses also placed him in the vicinity of the building and at the same nightclub frequented by the students on the night of the incident.

Paim, 38, was once considered a major talent in Portuguese football, having played for Sporting CP and spent time at Chelsea. He has a prior criminal record involving cocaine trafficking and was previously accused of rape in Lithuania in 2015, though he was acquitted in that case. Paim maintains his innocence and intends to present evidence in court.
