Barcelona football academy camp in Northern Cyprus sparks diplomatic row

FC Barcelona's football academy has announced a training camp to be held in Nicosia, Northern Cyprus, at the Near East University facilities. The camp is scheduled for two periods in September 2026, specifically September 7–11 and September 16–20, targeting participants aged 6 to 18.

The announcement, which explicitly uses the term 'Northern Cyprus' on the club's official website, has ignited a significant diplomatic and political dispute on the island. The Republic of Cyprus and the Cyprus Football Association (KOP) have expressed strong opposition, with KOP investigating whether the event violates FIFA and UEFA regulations. The far-right ELAM party has called on the Spanish government to intervene and cancel the organization.

In response, officials from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) have condemned the attempts to block the camp. TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel and President Tufan Erhürman criticized the moves as an attempt to maintain sports isolation against Turkish Cypriots, describing the interference as a humanitarian failure rather than a diplomatic victory.
