FC Barcelona faces scrutiny over financial stability under Laporta
Following Joan Laporta’s recent re-election as President of FC Barcelona, scrutiny has intensified regarding the club’s long-term financial stability and governance. While the club has seen a recovery in revenue, reaching 994 million euros for the 2024/25 period, this growth has been heavily supported by the use of “levers”—the sale of percentages of audiovisual rights and the monetization of digital assets.
Financial data indicates that Laporta inherited a significant deficit in 2021, including 533 million euros in bank debt and a negative net worth. Although current debt has been reported at 469 million euros and salary costs are at 54% of ordinary income, concerns remain regarding the sustainability of the club’s strategy. The institution faces upcoming obligations related to the construction of the new stadium and the long-term consequences of trading future assets for immediate liquidity.
