Rayo Vallecano-Athletic Club match suspended due to fan protests
A LaLiga match between Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Club was permanently suspended at the Estadio de Vallecas following repeated protests by home supporters. The incident, which occurred during the eighth round of the league, involved fans throwing objects such as paper airplanes, small plastic balls, and spheres onto the pitch.
The protests were directed at Rayo Vallecano president Raúl Martín Presa. The match was initially interrupted in the 13th minute, but after attempts to resume play, further object throwing forced referee José María Sánchez Martínez to send the players to the locker rooms and eventually abandon the game with the score at 0-0.
Rayo Vallecano issued a statement claiming the actions were “previously devised and planned” by an organized group, specifically naming the Bukaneros supporters. The club noted that they had previously warned authorities about potential hostility. LaLiga has condemned the behavior, stating it threatens security and prevents the normal course of competition. A new date for the match will be announced by the league.
