FC Barcelona recovers €727m in La Liga spending power
FC Barcelona has achieved a significant financial turnaround regarding its La Liga squad cost limit. Over the last five years, the club has moved from a negative spending ceiling of -€144m in the 2021-22 season to a projected limit of €582.7m for the 2026-27 season. This represents a total swing of approximately €727m, narrowing the gap with Real Madrid, which maintains a limit of €832.7m.
Despite this improved financial standing, the club's recruitment strategy in the central defense position remains notable for its low expenditure. Since Joan Laporta returned to the presidency in 2021, Jules Koundé is the only central defender the club has paid a transfer fee for, arriving from Sevilla for €50m plus variables. Other defenders, such as Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, and Iñigo Martínez, joined the club as free agents.
The club currently faces defensive depth challenges due to injuries to Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia, leaving manager Hansi Flick with limited options in the central defensive role.
