FC Barcelona removes DR Congo sponsorship due to payment delays

FC Barcelona has temporarily removed Democratic Republic of Congo branding from its training apparel and advertising due to payment delays. The four-year partnership, valued at approximately €44 million through 2029, has faced complications following disputes between French intermediary agencies regarding commissions and stalled installment transfers.

While the branding was visibly absent from recent training sessions, the club maintains that the commercial agreement remains legally in force. The partnership includes the slogan “RD Congo, cœur de l'Afrique” and covers training gear, promotional space at the future Spotify Camp Nou, and the establishment of Barça Academy centers in the nation.

The deal has faced significant scrutiny. Amnesty International previously described the contract as opaque, while legal complaints were filed in Barcelona regarding the potential diversion of public funds, though the case was not admitted for processing. Barcelona President Joan Laporta has defended the operation, citing its role in providing opportunities for Congolese youth and asserting the integrity of the transactions.
