FC Bayern and Wolfsburg reject Frauen-Bundesliga playoff plans
Top German women's football clubs FC Bayern München and VfL Wolfsburg have issued a joint veto against proposed changes to the Frauen-Bundesliga structure. The league leadership is considering the introduction of playoffs, potentially starting in the 2027/28 season, to increase the attractiveness of the league and boost revenue from TV rights.
Bayern Director Bianca Rech argued that playoffs would devalue the regular season, stating, “The attempt to increase the attractiveness of the league solely through knockout games at the end of the season falls short.” Similarly, Wolfsburg's Dieter Hecking called the move a “counterproductive intervention in the competition,” noting that it could result in the most consistent team not being crowned champion.
The dispute comes as the clubs prepare for the Women's Supercup in Ingolstadt. A final decision regarding the league's structural changes is expected during the clubs' assembly on November 30.
