FC Petrolul Ploiești celebrates 60 years since historic victory over Liverpool

The 60th anniversary of a historic football milestone is being marked, commemorating the victory of the Romanian champions, FC Petrolul Ploiești, against the English side FC Liverpool in the 1966 European Champions Cup.

The series of matches unfolded in three stages. After an initial 2-0 defeat at Anfield in front of approximately 45,000 spectators on September 28, 1966, Petrolul achieved a significant 3-1 victory at home in Ploiești on October 12, 1966. The home match saw massive local interest, with tickets selling out in just four hours and crowds arriving hours before kickoff to a stadium that was too small to accommodate the demand.

The tie eventually concluded with a 0-2 loss in a decisive third match held in Brussels. Despite the final outcome, the victory in Ploiești remains a unique and celebrated moment in Romanian football history, particularly as Liverpool was the reigning champion of the world's champion nation at the time.
