FC Porto faces Champions League struggles despite domestic success

FC Porto is experiencing a difficult campaign in the UEFA Champions League, failing to secure a point in their first three fixtures. This poor European performance follows a period of significant squad investment, including €116 million spent on new players to secure the 2025-26 Primeira Liga title.

While the club has seen success domestically, winning all eight of their opening league games in the 2026-27 season, their financial situation remains complex. Despite the title win, Porto reported a pre-tax loss of €29 million in the 2025-26 season, marking their third deficit in four years. This contrasts with competitors Benfica and Sporting, who both reported pre-tax profits.

Revenue streams for the club include €63 million from commercial activities and €20 million from matchdays, supported by an average crowd of 46,000. The club continues to rely on player trading, recording a €56 million profit on player sales in 2025-26, and is currently modernizing the Estádio do Dragão in anticipation of the 2030 World Cup.
