FC Schalke 04 considers major Veltins-Arena expansion

FC Schalke 04 is considering a massive expansion of the Veltins-Arena to increase its capacity. The proposal involves removing the existing roof to construct a third tier, which could add approximately 20,000 seats. If realized, this would make the stadium the largest arena in Germany, significantly increasing its current capacity of 62,271.

The idea surfaced during a discussion marking the arena's 25th anniversary, where former construction manager Steven Wilbrenninck noted the technical feasibility of such a project. Schalke CEO Matthias Tillmann confirmed that the club is exploring long-term visions for the stadium's development beyond 2030, though he noted that the current economic situation precludes an immediate large-scale construction project.

While the club is consulting experts to determine technical and financial feasibility, no concrete costs or final capacity figures have been established. Construction expert Walter Hellmich, who was involved in the original arena build, noted that while technically possible, the project would require rigorous structural investigations.
