FC Schalke 04 deals with contract termination and youth demotion

Defender Henning Matriciani, a former U21 international, learned in late summer that FC Schalke 04 would not offer him a new contract only through a media screenshot. He criticized the club’s handling, saying the “shock was big” and that a brief personal conversation would have sufficed. Sporting director Frank Baumann later apologised for the communication. Schalke continues to support Matriciani’s rehabilitation after his January ACL injury, providing training facilities and hoping he will be fully fit by late September or early October.

Forward Mauro Zalazar was informed that he would train exclusively with the club’s U23 squad, effectively removing him from first‑team plans. In a U23 test match against Preußen Münster’s youth side, Zalazar answered with two goals in the 66th and 83rd minutes as Schalke U23 won 4–1. The club has similarly reassigned other fringe players – Tomas Kalas, Steve Noode and Martin Wasinski – while still searching for transfer solutions.
